MARENGO — Construction on the new Marengo swimming pool is near completion, but Portzen Construction will have to repair some cracks in the deck before the city signs off on it.
During a city council meeting Aug. 28, Marengo Councilman Travis Schlabach said the pool deck had 30 or 40 cracks in it, some small and some that need repaired.
Schlabach met with Portzen at the time the cracks were discovered and Portzen spray-painted Xs on the panels — about 15 of them — that Portzen agreed to replace.
“I think all in all they did a very good job,” said Schlabach. But the panels that are cracks should be replaced now to avoid problems down the road, he said.
The panels have a one-year warranty, said Schlabach, and more may have to be replaced after winter.
Though Portzen didn’t agree with all of the repairs Schlabach suggested, Schlabach said he got 95% of what he wanted.
“In the end, I was very happy,” Schlabach told the city council.
Portzen was receptive to the city’s concerns, said Marengo Mayor Adam Rabe. The city didn’t have get too aggressive, he said.
The council also approved spending an extra $500 for rock under the slide which was being installed the end of last month. City Administrator Karla Marck said installers suggested putting four to six inches of rock in the base of the slide.
The pool is scheduled to be certified by the state Sept. 19.
