Annual Thrivent cookout
A member appreciation event hosted by Thrivent Financial representative Willis Wulf will be held Friday, June 2, at 1854 First Square Park on the corner of Highland and Welsh Streets, Williamsburg. Serving will run from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. A free will offering will be taken to help defray the costs for the next Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity trip. These trips are open to any interested adults. Rain date will be June 9. No products will be offered for sale at this event.
Community hymn sing
Pleasant Grove Grace Brethren Church will host a community hymn sing at 6 p.m. Sunday, June 11. Anyone who wishes to prepare a piece of special music or a favorite reading with which to bless the congregation is invited to do so. Those attending are also invited to bring a favorite finger food snack item to share during the fellowship time which will follow.
North English summer kick off
Kick off summer with a luau party from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, June 4, at the North English Community Center, 210 S. Main St., North English. The menu includes pulled pork sandwiches, party potatoes, salads, dessert and drink for a free will offering.
North English Saturday Markets
Markets will be held every Saturday through Oct. 7 on Main Street behind Freeman Foods, North English, from 8 to 11 a.m. Vendors are invited to bring their own tables and tents. There is no fee. Items include local produce, crafts and goods, as well as live music. Contact Beth Carter at (319) 325-3713 with questions.
Pioneer Heritage Museum opening
The Iowa County Pioneer Heritage Museum, Marengo, will open for the season Saturday, June 3, with a free grill lunch from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The museum and grounds are located at 675 East South St., Marengo, and will remain open until 4 p.m. for the public to tour. Special exhibits this year include wedding dresses from the past and Mildred Benson, author of the “Nancy Drew” books.
Herbs Basics at Williamsburg Library
A free workshop on the basics of growing herbs will be presented by the Iowa County Master Gardeners at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, June 10, at the Williamsburg Public Library. This event will provide instruction, tips, and expert advice from local gardeners along with refreshments made from herbs. This presentation will be held in the lower level large meeting room. Lawyers in the Library
The Williamsburg Public Library will host the Spring Lawyers in Libraries Program Thursday, June 8, at 7 p.m. The event is sponsored by the ISBA Elder Law Section in honor of Older Iowans Month. It will be held in the lower level, large meeting room at the library.
This program will focus on financial power of attorney, health care power of attorney, living wills and the Final Disposition Act. Lawyers in Libraries is a joint effort by the Iowa State Bar Association, the State Library of Iowa, Iowa Legal Aid, and the Polk County Bar Association Volunteer Lawyers Project to help provide free legal information to Iowans across the state. Meals from the Heartland
Meals from the Heartland will package 30,000 meals from 10 a.m. to noon June 3 at Lutheran Interparish School, Williamsburg. Community support is encouraged. The event is sponsored by St. Paul Lutheran Church, Williamsburg. Please contact the church office to volunteer, make a monetary donation or with any questions at (319) 668-1266.
Butler’s Bunch Sharing for Hope
The Butler’s Bunch Sharing for Hope cancer support group will meet at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, June 14, in the executive boardroom at Compass Memorial Healthcare, Marengo. The group welcomes those being treated for cancer, who have had cancer, have been or are caregivers, are survivors, including school-age students, or those touched by cancer. Meetings are informal. Those who wish may share experiences as a patient, caregiver or may simply listen.

HLV Alumni Meeting June 24
The annual alumni meeting and banquet for Hartwick, Ladora, Victor, St. Johns and HLV will be held Saturday, June 24, at the Victor American Legion Hall. Social hour begins at 6 p.m. with dinner to follow at 7:15 p.m. Cost of the meal is $20 per person. RSVP by June 9 to Bernie McGuire, 5585 North St., Bettendorf, Iowa 52722. Norway Strong 5K
Norway Strong, a 5K run/walk to benefit the Norway Fire Station, will be held Saturday, June 3, at 8 a.m. Registration may be found at www.norwaystrong.org or call (319) 382-0933.
Flea Market in Van Horne
Birds of a Feather will host its second annual flea market from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 3. There will be vendors both at Birds of a Feather and indoors at the Community Center. This is the same day as townwide garage sales in Van Horne and Newhall.
Belle Plaine garage sales
Belle Plaine will hold citywide garage sales Friday and Saturday, June 2 and 3. Lists will be available at the Country Foods Bulletin Board on Wednesday, May 31.
Golf outing
The Blairstown Fire Department will host a golf outing Saturday, July 15, in Belle Plaine. Sign-up will be held closer to the event.
ESA assistance
Central Lutheran School, Newhall, will hold two sessions of ESA (Education Savings Account) application assistance. Sessions will be 6 to 7 p.m. June 12 and 14. Computers will be provided. Contact the school at 310 3rd St. W, Newhall anytime, or on these dates to have assistance with your application.
