MARENGO — The Marengo Community Center and senior dining board of directors and volunteers have decided to cancel the 2025 soup supper fundraiser normally held in September, said Julie Alexander, MCC board treasurer.
“We were looking forward to the event this year after not being able to hold it last year, but due to several of our volunteers dealing with health issues and other circumstances beyond our control, we decided to cancel this event, Alexander said.
The community center is in need of funding to continue its services for people in this and surrounding communities, said Alexander. The center serves about 10-25 sit-down meals and delivers 10-12 to homebound residents every day, Alexander said.
The organization provides hot, nutritious and well-balanced meals and fellowship, but home visits also provide welfare checks to ensure the safety of residents.
Meals are open to all ages and are served at noon Monday through Friday. Anyone 60 years of age and older can receive a meal for a nominal fee, and those under 60 years of age are asked to pay $5.
Call 24 hours in advance to make a reservation.
Volunteers help serve meals for in-person dining attendees, deliver meals to seniors in their homes and help with fundraising to provide all of these services to area senior citizens, said Alexander.
The community center hopes have its annual soup supper next year, but in order to continue its senior dining services, it needs donations and volunteers.
Funding is needed to pay rent and utilities, said Alexander. The Marengo Community Center is a nonprofit organization and donations are tax deductible.
Donations may be sent to or dropped off at Marengo Community Center, Inc., 1083 Court Ave., Marengo, IA 52301.
Donations may also be given to Julie Alexander, MCC Board Treasurer.
