Student athletes from six local schools participated in this year’s Compass Memorial Healthcare’s Sports Physical Program.
Physicals are required each year to provide students with a baseline physical that clears them for participation in athletic activity. Alongside the actual physical, student immunizations are reviewed, and the importance of healthy lifestyle choices and mental health is discussed.
Jillissa Chvala, Clinical Operations Director for the five hospital owned clinics, Colonies Family Medical Clinic, Marengo Family Medical Clinic, North English Family Medical Clinic, Victor Family Medical Clinic and Williamsburg Family Medical Clinic, reported higher volumes this year over last year.
“Sports physicals are important for students,” said Chvala. “It gives our providers an opportunity to identify any injuries or health issues for students before they participate in school related activities.
“During physicals, students have a chance to speak to athletic trainers, nurses and providers to review any past injuries or illness and helps to decrease their risk of injury or performance in the coming school year.”
Compass Memorial Healthcare charges a nominal fee for these physicals and then donates back the full portion to the school from which the student attends.
A total of 158 physicals were performed, providing funds to each participating school. The athletic departments at each school can use those funds as needed to update equipment or uniforms.
Participating in this year’s Sports Physical Program were BGM, Belle Plaine, English Valleys, HLV, Iowa Valley and Williamsburg Schools.
Compass Memorial Healthcare is a 25 bed Critical Access Hospital in Marengo.
