Iowa County — Last year, Compass Memorial Healthcare and Clinics had a direct impact on employment of 351 jobs, adding over $54 million to Iowa County’s economy, according to the latest study by the Iowa Hospital Association.
Compass Memorial also contributed just over $1 million dollars in value of community benefit provided beyond healthcare service delivery. “We at Compass Memorial Healthcare are extremely proud of our role as leaders in our county, and surrounding communities, as the healthcare provider of choice and as an engaged and active member of our communities,” stated Barry Goettsch, Chief Executive Officer. “There are many things that make us uniquely better, but one considerate characteristic is that we live where we serve, and service is central to our culture. It is our honor to serve in whatever capacity we are able to ensure that the citizens in all of our communities receive the best in healthcare as it should be delivered, our schools are able to invest more in our students versus in other areas that CMH is able to assist with, and that we can contribute to the opportunity for our communities as a whole to thrive and prosper. Without the support of our citizens, we are without purpose and the opportunity to fulfill our mission. It is important to CMH that we invest appropriately back into our communities, into our team members, and into our facilities. All healthcare providers in our area cannot claim the same objective.”
The study was compiled from hospital-submitted data to the American Hospital Association’s annual survey of hospitals. The study found that Iowa hospitals employed 145,252 people in 2022. As an income source, hospitals provided over $9.3 billion in wages. Hospital expenses accounted for over $21.5 billion of the state’s gross domestic product.
“Iowa’s hospitals and health systems implemented the programs and services accounted for in this study in response to their communities’ needs,” IHA President and CEO Chris Mitchell said. “Many of these programs and services wouldn’t exist without hospital support and leadership. These efforts, with IHA’s advocacy, help ensure the financial stability of hospitals, making it possible for them to provide the services and programs most-needed by the people they serve.”
The Iowa Hospital Association is a voluntary membership organization representing hospital and health system interests to business, government, and consumer audiences.
