WILLIAMSBURG — The Williamsburg City Council approved the final plat for the vacation of Penn Street east of South Highland Street this month.
The vacation will allow St. Mary’s Catholic Church to begin a building project that will create a parking lot between the church and its community center on the other side of Penn Street.
The city will vacate Penn Street only in front of the church, said City Manager Aaron Sandersfeld.
An addition to the church, as drawn by Bray Architects, will extend into the current street creating a ground-level, handicap accessible entrance to the church.
The final plat for North Street Subdivision was presented to the Williamsburg Planning and Zoning Commission Nov. 18 for approval and the final plat was reviewed by engineering company Snyder and Associates.
Williamsburg Planning and Zoning Commission recommended the approval of the final plat.
