IOWA CITY — What started as a way to honor one young man has become a major force in cancer research at UI Health Care.
Courage Ride returns for its 21st year Saturday, Aug. 9, continuing its mission to fund sarcoma research at Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center, said organizers in a press release last week.
The event was founded in memory of Seth Bailey, of Riverside, Iowa, who passed away at 25 after an eight-year battle with sarcoma.
Sarcoma is a rare and aggressive cancer, accounting for less than 1% of adult cancers and about 21% of childhood cancers. With more than 150 known subtypes, it remains difficult to treat, organizers said. Sarcoma receives only 1% to 2% of all cancer research dollars.
Since its inception in 2005, Courage Ride has raised $935,000. This year, the event intends to surpass the $1M mark.
The ride begins and ends at Big Grove Brewery & Taproom in Iowa City and offers five route options for cyclists of all levels. The event also includes breakfast and lunch and features a silent auction, live music and other activities, all open to the public.
A virtual ride option is available for $25 for those who want to support the cause from anywhere.
The fundraising goal for 2025 is $80,000. Courage Ride offers five sponsorship levels, starting at just $100, making it easy for businesses, organizations, and individuals to get involved.
Those interested in a sponsorship or donating items to the silent auction can use the website's contact form to send a message to the Courage Ride team of volunteers.
Register online at CourageRide.org. Earlybird pricing is available until Aug. 3. Registration includes breakfast, lunch, snacks at rest stops and SAG support for cyclists.
