WILLIAMSBURG — Cooper Grimm started the game off with a dunk, and that set the tone for what the first quarter would become for Center Point-Urbana against Williamsburg in a WaMaC boys basketball matchup Friday.
The Raiders’ season-opener got off to a slow start offensively, and CPU capitalized, scoring the game’s first 13 points. CPU held a double-digit lead the rest of the way in a 62-43 win.
Noah Banos got Williamsburg on the board at the 4:21 mark, but the Stormin Pointers were able to build a 20-point lead after a quarter.
Boden Kane, off the bench, hit three three-pointers for CPU in the quarter.
“Early it was them being hot to start, and we were not taking great shots,” Williamsburg head coach Brad Knoop said. “ We weren’t running our offense and we had no rhythm.”
Take out the first quarter, and the Raiders outscored CPU by one the rest of the way.
The Raiders’ offense finally got going in the second, and the defense held CPU to just nine points.
“Besides the first quarter, I thought we played really well and I was happy with their effort,” Knoop said. “Our defense stepped up, and we rebounded well all night.”
The halftime score was 38-23.
The lead reached its peak at 22 in the third, but the Raiders were able to close the third quarter on a 6-0 run with baskets from Griffin Becker, Dylan Weisskopf and Colin Reed.
After another Reed basket to start the fourth, the Stormin Pointers’ lead was the smallest since the first quarter, at 14.
A quick 4-0 spurt from CPU ended any chance of a comeback.
Weisskopf and Becker each finished in double figures for the Raiders, with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
CPU had three in double figures. Lucas Lopata and Kane each had 12, Grimm added 11.
“The ability to put the ball in the hole hurt us, especially with how they shot from three,” Knoop said.
“It’s game one for us, and I was pleased with the effort. I told them to keep their heads high. They played their butts off.”
Williamsburg played the following day at Fort Madison Saturday, and picked up win number one of the season, defeating the Bloodhounds 77-41.
