MARENGO — A local family recently donated a photo of the World War II Monument in Washington, D.C. to Iowa County for the Veterans Affairs office.
Pat Hartin and Rita Knock, daughters of Thomas and Helen Hartin, donated the framed photo, said Jennifer Olson, director of Iowa County Commission of Veterans Affairs.
County supervisors agreed to hang the photo outside the Veterans Affairs office in the basement of the courthouse where veterans could see it, Olson said.
“Our goal is to donate it to the Iowa County Veterans Association in memory of our parents,” said Hartin and Knock in an email last week.
“Mom took a trip to Washington, D.C. to view the World War II monument in honor of her husband, our father, who served in the Army during World War II,” the women said.
“She purchased the World War II print at the time of her trip and had it framed later. The picture hung in her residence as long as she lived.”
Helen was a clerk in the Iowa County Courthouse from 1963-1987, and Thomas served in the U.S. Army during World War II, from 1942-1945.
“Since both parents were longtime residents of Marengo, our goal is to honor both who served their country and our county with honor and dignity,” their daughters said.
