BELLE PLAINE — From returning a majority of their six state qualifying events last season to getting some athletes back healthy this season, there is a lot to be excited about for the Belle Plaine boys track & field team this season.
“Last year was a small but well rounded team that relied heavily on juniors and freshman,” Belle Plaine coach Scott Nilles said. “I am looking forward to seeing those guys grow as seniors and sophomores now.”
“With a few new juniors and a good group of freshman, we should have a very successful season.”
Sam DeMeulenaere and Lane Vokoun are key returners for the Plainsmen.
DeMeulenaere was a state medalist in the 400-meter run last season, placing seventh. The Plainsmen middle distance runner also qualified in the 800 and ran on the team’s sprint medley qualifying relay.
DeMeulenaere also provides hurdle abilities.
Vokoun brought home two medals last season placing fifth in the long jump and seventh in the 110 high hurdles. Vokoun also ran on the team’s sprint medley at state.
Ty Alcott and Lucas Eichhorn are back and healthy this season for the Plainsmen.
Alcott placed eighth in the high jump his sophomore season and was also on the team’s shuttle hurdle relay team that qualified.
Eichhorn qualified in the 800 and was the anchor on the team’s sixth-place distance medley relay two seasons ago.
“Both are looking stronger and faster then ever,” said Nilles.
The South Iowa Cedar League looks to be very competitive again this season.
The Plainsmen placed sixth last season with 67 team points.
“We will be very competitive at the SICL conference meet, and we want to come away with as many all-conference performances as we can,” Nilles said.
“We want to get as many guys in as many events to state as we can and ultimately have a good group of place winners.”
The Plainsmen will be competing at no indoor meets this season and will open their season March 31 at Benton Community.
