MARENGO — The Wandling-Wendel American Legion Post #76 of Marengo recently recognized Keith D. Disterhoft for his 60 years of membership in the American Legion.
Disterhoft was born in Marengo and graduated from Iowa Valley Community School District. He was inducted into the U.S. Army in January of 1962 and received his training in advanced infantry during the Vietnam War era at Fort Carson, Colorado.
Disterhoft was selected for further training as a radio teletype operator in Morse code and was deployed to Germany to serve in the Third Army Division for two years.
Prior to his deployment, Disterhoft married Rebecca “Becky” Haas who accompanied him to Germany for his years of service.
Returning to the states, Disterhoft was discharged as a sergeant and received a letter of appreciation for his service on behalf of our country.
Disterhoft and his wife (now deceased) returned to Marengo where Disterhoft joined his father and brothers in the operation of Marengo Ready Mix, eventually becoming the manager of that business. He retired several years ago.
Disterhoft became an active member of the American Legion in Marengo upon his discharge from service. He took his turn as the Legion Commander and was a regular part of the Honor Guard unit at funerals until health concerns made that more difficult.
