Drake University has announced it is expanding its “faculty-led” study abroad programs past Europe and into South Korea, with plans to launch for students within two years.
The Des Moines private university stated in a news release it is developing a “DU Korea” study abroad program in Seoul, South Korea, to join existing DU programs housed in Spain and England.
Created in partnership with education travel company WorldStrides and Konkuk University, the program will begin welcoming students to Seoul in spring 2027. According to the release, a cohort model is used in each program where Drake students enroll in a common course taught by Drake faculty and fill the rest of their schedule with courses from the partner university.
“The cohort model embodies Drake’s mission to build a global perspective, and we’re thrilled to bring this successful approach to Seoul,” said Annique Kiel, Drake University chief global affairs officer and dean of global programs, in the release.
Students of all majors are welcome to join the new study abroad program, the release stated, and its first cohort will enroll between 10-20 students. Drake University Associate Dean of Student Affairs Kelley Ellis, also an associate professor of practice in accounting, will lead the cohort and teach a course called “Business for Good” for both Drake and Konkuk University students.
Outside of coursework, the release stated students will take trips to Busan and Tokyo and will have the chance to “incorporate a custom internship” into their semester studying abroad.
“When students live and learn in a vibrant capital city like Seoul with the support of a Drake faculty member, they gain a level of confidence that helps maximize their experience,” Kiel said in the release. “Students who participate in this program will not only have access to a world-class curriculum that sets them up for a breadth of careers but also the opportunity to further develop their intercultural competency and grow as responsible global citizens.”
