KEOTA — A South Iowa Cedar League matchup in Keota became a battle of pitchers Thursday.
HLV-TC’s Lily Randall and Keota’s Jessalyn Aller combined for 13 strikeouts and one earned run between them.
“This is one of best games she’s came out and pitched for us,” HLV-TC coach Grace Parrott said. “She threw a lot of strikes and got ahead in a lot of counts.”
In games like these, teams have to take advantage of scoring chances, and the Eagles did it twice, coming out on top 2-0.
Through two innings, the only hit in the game came from the Warriors’ Ema Roberts.
The Eagles got their first hit of the game in the third inning; it provided the only earned run of the game.
A hit and stolen base later, Elyse Lyle had a runner in scoring position and delivered with an RBI single.
Randall doubled in the fourth for the Warriors, but the team couldn’t get that next hit to tie things up.
The Warriors had runners in scoring position in four separate instances and totaled six hits in the game.
“The biggest thing is, when we have people on base, we have to hit the ball hard,” Parrott said following the loss. “We made contact, just not necessarily solid contact when we needed it.”
The Eagles added one more run in the fifth after a low throw to third skipped past the defense, allowing the base-runner to reach home.
Aller ended the game three up, three down in the top of the seventh.
“It was a good game overall, said Parrott. ”Defensively, everyone did well.“
The highlight of the Warriors’ defensive efforts came in the fourth when the Eagles got runners on second and third with no outs.
The inning ended with three straight fly outs, including a diving catch from shortstop Ayla Hall for the last out.
The Warriors moved to 9-5 following the loss, and with one more win will reach double-digit victories for the third straight season.

The Eagles baseball team also came out on top Thursday, 7-1.
The Warriors’ lone run came in the fifth inning.
