MARENGO — Energy, effort and have fun. Those are the words Belle Plaine head softball coach Morgan Goslin wants her team to play with.
That was on full display Tuesday night in a 12-7 win against Iowa Valley.
“We are a completely different team than we were to start the season,” Goslin said.
“The team has learned to believe in oneself and each other.”
The game remained scoreless after one with a lone single from Iowa Valley’s Lydia Kriegel to start things off.
The Tigers struck first in the bottom of the second.
After a single from Skyler Hoyt and a fielding error, the Tigers had runners in scoring position.
An overthrow and a wild pitch gave the Tigers two runs, and Lydia Kriegel hit an RBI triple to make it 3-0 after two.
The score remained the same after three innings, and the bats started to get hot for the Plainsmen in the fourth.
A single from Ella Greider and double from Jacey Reineke set up a two-RBI single from Lacie Rethman.
Lydia Kriegel, who pitched the whole game for the Tigers, got out of a bases-loaded jam with a strikeout.
Iowa Valley added one in the bottom of the inning off an RBI single from Maeci Marshall.
The Plainsmen had their biggest inning of the game in the fifth, scoring a total of five runs.
Singles from Ellie Hosek and Reineke set up runners on second and third and both scored off an error.
An RBI single from Eva Brannaman and two RBI triple from Izzy Sankot made the lead 7-4 heading to the bottom of the fifth.
Sankot also pitched the whole game for the Plainsmen.
Belle Plaine added three more in the top of the sixth.
A double from Hosek, single from Ella Grieder and infield single from Rethman set the bases loaded.
The Plainsmen scored two off errors and an RBI single from Brannaman.
A two RBI double from Izzy Kriegel cut into the Plainsmen lead heading to the seventh with a score of 10-6.
Lydia Kriegel also singled in the inning capping a 4-4 performance. Kriegel, following Tuesday’s game, leads the SICL in batting average (. 541), hits (33) and triples (4).
“Lydia is hitting well and is a tough out every time at the plate,” Iowa Valley head coach Monica Miller said.
Belle Plaine added two more in the seventh highlighted by an RBI single from Rethman.
The Tigers added one in the bottom of the inning off a fielder’s choice RBI from Shayla Helgeson to make the final score 12-7.
“We were up at the beginning and lost our momentum,” Miller said following the game.
This Tuesday night matchup was a weather makeup from a previously scheduled game and the two teams will also play each other tonight in Belle Plaine.
“It’ll be another great game. Iowa Valley is a great team,” Goslin said.
“We are going to have to bring it again”
