SEARSBORO — They prepared all season with the hope of having a different result this time around, and the race execution met those goals.
Class 1A No. 9 English Valleys captured the South Iowa Cedar League girls cross-country title Tuesday at Big Springs Shooting Complex with a team score of 50 points.
The score edged out 1A No. 11 Lynnville-Sully, which won the conference title last season and also defeated the Bears earlier this season head-to-head.
“It feels great to do well as a team knowing how much we prepared for it, knowing that we could count on each other and put it all together,” Addison Achenbach said.
The Bears’ pack came out strong. Their top five runners were in the top 16 at the halfway point as runners began their second loop of the course.
“It was the goal to get out strong and work together as a team,” Addison Achenbach said. “When we work together things go well.”
The team’s effort was led by a third-place finish from Anna Luers, who completed the course in a time of 20:32.65. The Bears’ next three runners, including Addison Achenbach, who ran a season best of 21:04.92, also finished with all-conference honors.
The Bears hope to carry their momentum into the state qualifying event next week.
North Mahaska’s Emmerson Jedlicka put together a strong second half in the race to claim the individual title in 19:53.26.
Excluding English Valleys, the highest area finisher was Montezuma’s Claire Erselius, who was 23rd in a time of 23:38.29.
Belle Plaine’s Elyse Jacobi was 24th. BGM’s Penny Clayton rounded out the top 25.
In the boys’ race, an English Valleys’ runner was the top area finisher.
Issac Frazier ran his way to first-team all-conference honors with a fifth-place finish, and a personal best of 17:41.54.
Frazier ran most of the race as a solo effort, caught in the middle of the lead pack of four with the chase pack, led by teammate Will Luers, behind him.
“It’s been like that for me all season,” Frazier said on being in no man’s land. “When I visualize there right in front of me I do better.”
Now a sophomore, Frazier hopes to see a repeat of last season when he qualified for the state meet.
“I’m feeling good and I think I have a good chance again this year,” Frazier said.
Two BGM runners also earned all-conference honors in the boys’ race, Carter Corona in seventh and Aston Brown 10th.
Corona didn’t think he’d be able to get back last season’s speed as a freshman following a preseason surgery.
“Its been difficult getting back to this point,” Corona said. “I had surgery on my ear to remove some growth on the bone around my ear drum.”
The growth was noncarcinogenic, and Corona has another surgery planned for early next year.
But through hard work and perseverance, Corona is back to times he was running at the end of last season, and he plans to take a shot at qualifying for state individually next week.
“It boots my confidence,” Corona said of his race. “It shows that my all my hard work from summer is paying off.”
A mere second behind Corona, was his freshman teammate Brown who ran a personal best, and had a fast finish down the closing stretch.
“I’ve been trying to help him practice, and we talk a lot about strategy,” Corona said. “It’s great working with him, and I’m proud of him.”
Sigourney’s Troy Klett won the boys individual title in 16:46.43.
1A No. 9 Lynnville-Sully dominated the team race with 33 points; English Valleys came in second with 92.
Belle Plaine’s Devin Timm was just shy of all-conference honors, coming in 13th in a time of 18:33.27.
HLV-TC’s Drew Thys and Allan Scott were 15th and 16th, and Montezuma’s Cade Lowry was the last man under 19 minutes, in 17th.
