English Valleys picks up two conference wins

Winner of the week among area girls basketball teams this week?
The answer would be English Valleys, which picked up two wins in South Iowa Cedar League play.
In a road test with another upper-half team in the conference, the Bears defeated Sigourney 65-56 Tuesday night.
A key moment came at the end of the third when Aubrey Achenbach connected on a basket plus the foul for a 44-41 lead that the Bears would not relinquish.
Anna Luers led the Bears with 25 points.
English Valleys also picked up a 38-30 win over Colfax-Mingo Friday and is now 6-4 on the season, 5-3 in SICL play.
In boys basketball, Montezuma and English Valleys were the only area teams to pick up a win this week.
The Bears defeated Colfax-Mingo 50-35 Friday for their sixth win of the season.
Other area highlights
• The Williamsburg girls basketball team got back in the win column with a 54-40 win over Marion Friday. The Class 3A No. 5 Raiders moved to 6-3 on the season.
• HLV-TC’s Erilea Kupka led the Warriors with eight points in a 36-19 loss to Montezuma Tuesday. Lance Milton and Sean McCulloch each had five points for the Warriors in the boys game in which Montezuma won 54-19.
• BGM’s Maddox Rhoads scored in double figures for the BGM boys with 10 points in a 62-34 loss to Lynnville-Sully Hayden Bockenstedt shot 3-4 from the field with six rebounds in a 57-13 loss to Lynnville-Sully on the girls side.
• Belle Plaine’s Jadie Dahlquist led the Plainsmen with 14 points in a 36-27 loss to GMG Monday. Dahlquist added six rebounds and five steals. Mason Walter scored 11 points for the Plainsmen in the boys game.
