SIGOURNEY — The Sigourney Golf Club course is no easy challenge. The rolling hills provided almost 300 feet of elevation gain in the 5k races Tuesday night.
English Valleys Gage Heyne and Anna Luers conquered them better than anyone else, winning the high school races.
Luers, in her freshman season, has led the Bears to ninth place in this week’s team rankings and is ranked 23rd individually in Class 1A.
The freshman finished in 20:52, winning by 30 seconds, a lead that slowly increased throughout the race.
“It was a hard course. I just tried to keep going and push through the pain,” Luers said.
The rest of the team finished in the top 15, rolling to a dominant team victory with 20 points.
“Our team has been pushing each other a lot through the summer and the season,” Luers said. ”The goal is to get to state and do well there.“
The adjustment from the 1.5 and two-mile races up to the 5k has been no problem for Luers so far this season.
“I’m trying to learn a lot as I go, and our coach is doing a good job of pushing us,” Luers said.
In the boys race, Heyne, the second-ranked runner in Class 1A, won by 28 seconds over Columbus’ Ty Muniz.
Iowa Valley’s Jeffrey Crawford placed fourth in 18:28 and improved on last week’s time in Williamsburg on a more difficult course.
English Valleys Isaac Frazier and Evan Koehn and HLV’s Peyton Roth all finished in the top 10.
Belle Plaine’s top finisher was Madox Purk, who finished 17th.
OTHER NOTABLE PERFORMANCES
Will Luers won the junior high boys race, running 9:31. English Valleys had three of the four top finishers.
Belle Plaine’s Elyse Jacobi was second in the girls race.
