EV Duals kick off new year

NORTH ENGLISH — With the new year here, we have now reached roughly the halfway point of the boys’ wrestling season.

The postseason will be here before you know it, starting in February with conference meets.

Four area teams had their first competitions of 2025 Saturday in North English, coming off the holiday break.

English Valleys, Iowa Valley, Montezuma and Williamsburg competed in five rounds of duals. Mid-Prairie and Grinnell also competed.

One of the best matches of the day came in the first dual between Williamsburg’s Nile Sinn and Iowa Valley’s Chance Hoyt at 150 pounds. Hoyt made Sinn, a returning state placewinner, work hard for the victory.

Sinn got an escape point in the second period, but Hoyt used a reversal move for two points to take the lead in the third.

Sinn tied things up to force sudden victory, and got the winning takedown.

“Chance has really been evolving into a really nice wrestler,” said Iowa Valley coach Jeremy Kriegel. “He has bought into everything we preach and has a chip on his shoulder after not qualifying last year.”

Sinn will be tackling a new weight class the rest of the season, making the move to 150.

Riker Dewitt (106) and Sawyer Kirby (144) are moving down a weight class for the Raiders.

The Raiders went 5-0 in duals on the day and are 19-0.

“Its always tough that first time you compete after Christmas break,” Williamsburg coach Grant Eckenrod said. “It’s almost like starting over.

“We looked great in some situations but still have a lot of work to do. I am very happy with these guys and I know they will continue to get better.”

The Tigers went 4-1 on the day.

Josh Read (190) had a big win for the Tigers in their dual against Montezuma, winning by major decision over Brett Plants, a state qualifier last season.

“Our team needs to continue to work on finishing matches and being more aggressive right away,” said Kriegel. “We have some big conference duals coming up.”

For the hosting English Valleys Bears, Cael Grove (113) went 5-0 on the day, capping a strong showing.

Grove had three wins by pin, one by decision and one by forfeit.

In the decision match, Grove won a high scoring contest over Iowa Valley’s Carter Koenig scoring 14.

Braydon Anderson (157) finished his day strong, winning his last two matches for the Bears. Ben Coffman (175) went 3-2.

The Bears went 2-3 in duals, wrestling only eight.

Montezuma came into Saturday shorthanded from its usual bunch.

The Braves were missing five wrestlers, coach Mike Plants said.

Braxton Plants (215) went 4-1 on the day to lead the Braves.
