Wednesday, Sept. 27
The Williamsburg Public Library will hold its early-out Lego club for first and second grades from 1 to 2:45 p.m. Sign-up is required, and sessions are limited to 20 participants. Children are required to stay the full session unless picked up by a guardian. Contact the library to sign up.
Tammy Nyden, Professor of Philosophy at Grinnell College, will present a Bucket Course lecture titled “The Care Crisis and Social Justice” at the Drake Community Library’s Caulkins Room from 10-11:30 a.m. The event is free and open to the public. No reservations are necessary.
Thursday, Sept. 28
The Food Council at Belle Plaine Specialty Care, 1505 Sunset Dr., will play Bingo with Care Initiatives Hospice at 2 p.m.
Friday, Sept. 29
Bring new or gently used items to Victoria Hall (Knights of Columbus Hall) in Victor from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. to Fill the Truck for Camp Courageous. If unable to bring donations, call 319-647-2255 either day.
The Williamsburg Farmers Market will be open from 4-6 p.m. on the town square.
Oktoberfest begins in Amana with Barefoot Beck & The Ivanhoe Dutchmen from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The official keg tapping is set for 2 p.m. on stage with the Burgermeister. The Amana Colony Folksingers will perform from 4:30-6:15 p.m. A yodeling contest will be part of the show. From 6:30-9 p.m., Die Tieffen Keller Kinder will provide entertainment. Alpensterne is scheduled for 9:30 p.m. to midnight. Admission is $10 for a one-day pass and $15 for a two-day pass at the gate.
Saturday, Sept. 30
Oktoberfest continues in Amana with the parade at 10 a.m. Alpensterne is scheduled to entertain from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Brezel Schmeissen contest begins at 12:45, and the brat eating contest begins at 2 p.m. Alte Kameraden is scheduled to perform from 3-5 p.m. and 6-8:30 p.m. Alpensterne is set to perform from 9 p.m. to midnight. Admission is $10 for a one-day pass and $15 for a two-day pass at the gate.
The seventh annual Kites Over Grinnell takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Ahrens Park Soccer Field and Driving Range, 1510 Penrose Ave. in Grinnell. This year a sunset flight will take place from 7-9 p.m. Professional kite fliers from the American Kitefliers Association from all over the Midwest will display their skills during the event.

The farmers market in North English takes place every Saturday from 8-11 a.m. on the south side of Freeman Foods.
Sunday, Oct. 1
Amana’s Oktoberfest weekend concludes with the University of Iowa tuba group, Collegium, from 11-11:30 a.m., Alte Kameraden from noon to 2 p.m. and Alpensterne from 2:30-4:30 p.m.
The American Legion invites residents to a flag-lowering ceremony at 3 p.m. The legion will lower the flag at its old building and raise it at the new hall on Court Avenue west of Gateway Park. The colors will be lowered, folded and carried, along with the Legion and service flags, to the new Legion Hall and will be raised there.
Monday, Oct. 2
Residents can learn what to do in an emergency before paramedics arrive during a presentation by Paramedic Jason Scott at 5 p.m. at Victor Community Library. Refreshments will be provided.
Tuesday, Oct. 3
“Grieving to Healing” is the title of a series of meetings about grief to be held at the Powell Funeral Home in Williamsburg. Topics of discussion will include defining grief, the grief process and common reactions to our grief, coping with special days and learning what we can do to get our lives back together. The sessions will take place from 6-7 p.m. on four consecutive Tuesdays beginning Oct. 3. No reservations are necessary. Wednesday, Oct. 4
Professor Sharon Quinsaat will present a Bucket Course lecture titled “The Experience and Meaning of Homeland Trips Among Filipino Immigrants.” The course will be held from 10-11:30 a.m. in the Caulkins Community Room at the Drake Community Library. Bucket Courses are open to everyone in the community; no preregistration or fee is required. Donations toward refreshments are welcome.
