Wednesday, May 1
Registration is due for a make-and-take activity at North English Public Library May 18. Iowa County Master Gardeners will host Digging in the Dirt, an activity for children ages 4 to 12, May 18 at 10 a.m. Registration will be limited to 10. Cost is $5. Financial assistance is available. Register at the North English Library, 123 S. Main in North English.
The Heart of Iowa Dems concludes its four-part weekly Zoom series “Conversations with Congressional Candidates” at 7 p.m. The final event features Christian Bohanan, a candidate for Congressional District 1, in conversation with Dave Loebsack, from Linn County. Thursday, May 2
The Poweshiek County Historical and Genealogical Society will meet at 1:30 p.m. at the Carnegie building, 200 S. Third St. in Montezuma. Scott and Bonnie Romine of North English will present a program about Iowa connections in the movies. The public is welcome. Refreshments will be served.
The First United Methodist Church in Marengo will observe the National Day of Prayer at 7 p.m. The public is invited. Special music will be presented by the Believers Chorus. Scriptures will be read and prayers delivered by delegates from various churches in the Marengo Ministerial Alliance.
Saturday, May 4
Maifest 2024 festivities kick off at 10 a.m. with a “May the Fest Be With You” parade through the village of Amana. Food and drink will be sold at the “World on Wheels – Food Truck Fair” from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and noon to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Festhalle. The Kinderplatz will be set up in the Peace Garden next to the Visitors Center. The Balloon Guy will be there, and Regan’s Face Painting will be offering free face painting from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The bar inside the Festhalle Barn will be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. All Natural, Blame Not the Bard and Swampland Jewels will provide music at the Festhalle Barn, and the Robert Thomas Dancenter Irish Performance Team will dance. The Maipole Dancers will perform at various locations all weekend.
A Wine & Beer Walk will be take place in the Amana Colonies during Maifest Saturday and Sunday. Visitors can purchase their 2024 Collectible Maifest pilsner glasses at the Visitors Center beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday and receive a free passport. Have the passports stamped at participating locations from 10 a.m. Saturday until 8 p.m. Sunday for a chance to win a $50 gift certificate to Amana Colonies businesses.
Tuesday, May 7
Josh Humphrey of Iowa County Emergency Management will discuss basic preparedness at The North English Public Library at 5:30 p.m. The library is located at 123 S. Main in North English.
P.E.O. Chapter CN will meet at 7 p.m. at the Williamsburg Public Library. A foreign exchange student will be the guest speaker.

Butler’s Bunch Sharing for Hope cancer support group will meet at 6:30 p.m. in the executive board room of Compass Memorial Healthcare in Marengo. The group welcomes anyone who has been affected by cancer to share their experiences or simply listen. To join via the internet, contact Mary Warwick at 319-642-8068.
