Iowa author Deborah Hufford will be at the Williamsburg Public Library at 6 p.m. Hufford’s debut novel, “Blood to Rubies,” was named Book of the Year in 2023 by the American Writing Awards. The event is free. Books will be available for purchase.
Saturday, May 25
Friends of the Marengo Public Library will host Iowa Mutual UFO Network State Director Greg Anderson at the library, 235 E. Hilton St. in Marengo, at 2 p.m. Anderson will talk about notable Iowa Ufologists, common objects mistaken for UFOs and how a UFO siting is investigated.
TKM Theatrical Productions is bringing FunkDaddies to the Amana Performing Arts Center from 6-9 p.m. FunkDaddies is a funk band that plays horn-driven soul, R & B and dance music in an original style. The band formed to bring the best, funky dance music to the Midwest. The concert is free with a donation.
The Blairstown Demolition Derby begins at 6 p.m. 1/2 mile north of Blairstown on County Road V-66. Admission is $5 for children 6-12, $10 for children 13 and older and free for children 5 and younger. Pit passes cost $25. Concession, food and a beer tent will be available on the ground. Coolers are not allowed.
Monday, May 27
American Legion Post 76 and the American Legion Auxiliary of Marengo will conduct a Memorial Day ceremony at Marengo Cemetery at 10 a.m. Following the ceremony, activities will move to Gateway Park for the Naval recognition service and placement of a wreath in the waters of the Iowa River. The group will spend the rest of the day with resident of the Rose Haven Nursing Home, south of the screened porch. The public is invited to all events.
Millersburg American Legion Post 521 will hold a Memorial Day service at Millersburg Cemetery at 9 a.m. In case of rain, the service will be at the Millersburg City Hall and Fire Station. The Auxiliary will serve refreshments following the service.
The Williamsburg VFW and Auxiliary will conduct a Memorial Day service at 10 a.m. at the Williamsburg fire station, 102 Fire Ridge Dr.
North English Memorial Day Services are set for 11 a.m. at the North English Cemetery. Bill Grimm will speak. The American Legion Ross T. Hadley Post 488 and local Girl and Boy Scouts and the English Valleys High School band will help with the services. In the event of rain, services will move to Gene’s Gym.
