English Valleys sophomore Gage Heyne broke an eight-year-old conference record to lead a strong showing by Hometown Current area athletes in the 2023 South Iowa Cedar League Indoor Track and Field Championships Monday, March 20, at Grinnell College.
Heyne won the boys' 1,600 meter run in 4:52.82 to shatter the league indoor record of 5:00.07 set in 2015 by Belle Plaine's Trey Squires. Joined by senior Cecil Smallwood and juniors Myles Grove and Jonathyn Downing, Heyne also anchored the Bears' 4 x 800 relay team to victory in 9:11.43, easily beating their closest challengers by 35 seconds.
Iowa Valley's boys crowned more conference champions than anyone — five, running No. 1 in three of the four relays.
Freshman Josh Read, senior Caden Knapp, sophomore Jeffrey Crawford and junior Taite Peach won the 1,600-medley relay for the Tigers in 4:05.96. Sophomore Caleb Haack and seniors Clayten Kinzenbaw, Pierce Kienitz and Evan Kearney were 4 x 200 champs in 1:35.82, and Read, Crawford, Haack and junior Karter Theissen won the 4 x 400 in 3:45.92
Haack added an individual title in the high jump, clearing 6 feet, and Kearney and Kinzenbaw went one-two in the 200 meter dash in 23.86 and 24.26.
Belle Plaine junior Sam DeMeulenaere crowned himself a champion in the boys' 60 meter high hurdles (9.22 seconds) and 800 meter run (2:16.7), English Valleys senior Kayli Mohror won the girls' long jump (14-feet 6-1/2 inches) and 60 meter dash (8.26 seconds). Belle Plaine senior Ella Greider came away victorious in the girls' 200 meter dash (:29.32).
The outdoor season gets underway this week with Belle Plaine hosting girls and boys invitationals Tuesday, March 28, and Thursday, March 30. Williamsburg hosts a co-ed invite Tuesday, April 4.
