NORTH ENGLISH — The final results don’t go in the win/loss column, but three area boys’ basketball teams got some game reps at the English Valleys Jamboree Monday night.
The night featured four scrimmages, each totaling 16 minutes, half of a normal game.
The scrimmages allowed HLV-TC, Iowa Valley and English Valleys to get a glimpse of their teams one week after practices have begun, and before official games start next week.
HLV-TC vs. Winfield Mt. Union
Scrimmage one on the night gave a glimpse of the new look of the Warriors team with several new additions from Tri-County.
The length of the Wolves in their zone provided some issues, but the Warriors showed the ability to hustle for offensive rebounds off misses.
The shots were not always falling, but the Warriors may be a team that shoots a lot of threes this season, led by Peyton Roth, who had 10 points in the scrimmage.
The final scrimmage score was 21-14 Winfield Mt. Union.
“Things got better as the scrimmage went on,” HLV-TC head coach Shawn Welsh said. “It showed us stuff we need to work on for next week.”
The Warriors kick off their season Monday against English Valleys.
Iowa Valley vs. Springville
Springville brought full-court pressure the whole scrimmage against the Tigers.
When the Tigers were able to settle into their offense, Iowa Valley’s big man, Caleb Haack, showed the ability to effectively pass the ball to the open guy as he was double-teamed by the defense.
Haack finished with eight points, including an emphatic dunk in the second period.
“I thought overall we did some good things,” Iowa Valley first-year head coach Josh Konicek said. “We struggled shooting to start. I think nerves were a bit of an issue with that.”
Springville won the scrimmage 30-21.
“Just small effort plays we lost on, such as rebounding and 50/50 balls,” Konicek said. “Overall though, I liked what I saw with our starters and bench. Everything is fixable before our first game.”
The Tigers kick off their season next Tuesday vs. English Valleys.
English Valleys vs. Highland
The Bears are going to be young, with only two upperclassmen on the roster.
They played with a lot of energy in the Jamboree, forcing a lot of turnovers.
As a team, they hit three total three-pointers, while Everett Bender had some nice drives to the basket.
Highland was also hot from the three-point range as they extended their lead in the second period. The final scrimmage score was 36-15 Highland.
Look for the Bears to improve as the season goes on and they figure things out and build their chemistry.
