Five area teams in 1A District 9

Five area teams and seven teams in the South Iowa Cedar League are in the Class 1A District 9 bracket released by the Iowa High School Athletic Association late Monday afternoon.

Boys’ basketball District pairings for Class 1A and 2A begin with preliminary round in 1A Friday and first round games Monday, Feb. 17.

One area team was placed in the preliminary round, an eight-nine seed matchup to play in the eight-team district brackets.

English Valleys will host Meskwaki Settlement in the preliminary round Friday. The winner will play top-seed North Mahaska, the top team in the SICL West this season.

Iowa Valley will travel to Baxter in the other top of the bracket first-round game.

The Bolts and Tigers have had several common opponents in the regular season, including SICL teams Belle Plaine, North Mahaska and Lynnville-Sully.

Montezuma earned the two seed in the bottom portion of District 9 and will face BGM. The Braves beat BGM comfortably by 72-44 and 70-37 margins in the regular season.

The Braves could get a third shot at the Warhakws in the District final game, which will be played on a neutral court.

HLV-TC, seeded sixth, will face Sigourney.

The Warriors were defeated by the Savages 62-37 in their regular season matchup.

Belle Plaine was placed in District 10 and will travel to two-seed Dunkerton.

The District 9 winner will face the winner of District 10 in a substate final Saturday, Mar. 1, for a spot at State.
