Q. What kind of soil should I start seeds in this spring?
A. Commercially prepared soilless mixes, also known as seed starting media, like Jiffy Mix or Redi-Earth are recommended. Seeds are easier to start in a mix that is lightweight, drains water easily, and is free of disease. When your seedlings are ready to transplant into a larger container, use high quality potting soil.
Just about any container that holds the seed starting mix and has good drainage can be recycled to start seeds. Clean the container in soapy water then disinfect with dilute bleach prior to use. Once they start to grow, the new seedlings will require adequate light, water and fertilizer.
