HOMESTEAD — Pearl City Press announced this month the release of Homestead author Melinda Wichmann’s debut novel, “How to Live with a Ghost.”
Wichmann spent 35 years in print journalism as a reporter, columnist, photographer and editor with newspapers in east central Iowa, including The Pioneer Republican, The Journal Tribune, The Star Press Union, The Poweshiek County Chronicle Republican and The Hometown Current. She retired in 2023.
Wichmann has received multiple Master Columnist awards from the Iowa Newspaper Association and has won the All-Iowa Writers’ Conference short story contest twice.
“How to Live with a Ghost is a nuanced blend of romance, mystery, and the paranormal — with just the right amount of humor,” says Nick Narigon, author of The F-Man Himself and co-founder of Hayseed Press, according to a press release from Pearl City Press.
“Melinda Wichmann delivers a refreshing twist on the classic whodunit that’s perfect for fans of ghost stories, home renovation, and anyone who's ever whispered, ‘Did you hear that?’”
Pearl City Press described the novel as a light-hearted mystery/romance that follows former freelance journalist Jess McCallister as she moves into the century-old farmhouse of her dreams, only to find it already has a permanent resident.
McCallister attempts to figure out what her invisible roommate wants are complicated by lingering memories of disastrous relationships, mysterious goings-on in the abandoned pioneer cemetery on her property and a reclusive neighbor with a captivating smile who keeps showing up unexpectedly.
The novel’s themes of friendship, healing and second chances blend smoothly with elements of humor and adventure in an Eastern Iowa setting, Pearl City Press said.
Paperback and Kindle editions are available through Amazon.com and Barnesandnoble.com.
Wichmann is a graduate of Iowa State University. She lives on a family farm near the Amana Colonies with her husband, Jeff. In addition to writing, she enjoys training and showing her Australian shepherds in American Kennel Club obedience trials across the Midwest.
