DES MOINES — Iowa Valley’s Chance Hoyt has made the most of his state debut.
Hoyt faced the final elimination round, commonly called the ‘blood round,’ to start his day in the Class 1A 150-pound bracket Friday, day three of the Iowa High School Athletic Association Boys State Wrestling Tournament at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
The fourth-round consolations eliminated four wrestlers at each weight, reducing the field to the final eight who will earn medals.
Coming off a win by fall and tech fall on day two, Chance Hoyt stayed on the offensive.
After nearly having a pin in the first period, Chance Hoyt got one in the second against Riverside Oakland’s Taven Moore.
The win clinched a state medal for Chance Hoyt.
“I’ve worked all year to get to this point,” Chance Hoyt said. “I’m excited to medal at state in my first year qualifying.”
The offensive domination did not stop there. In the fifth-round of consolations, the end result was another fall over Beckman’s Preston Hunter.
Coincidentally, both falls occurred at three minutes and six seconds.
“I feel I can compete and battle against anybody in the state,” Chance Hoyt said.
Chance Hoyt will wrestle in the consolation semifinals Saturday and can place anywhere third to sixth.
Chance’s brother Mason dropped his blood round match, ending a good run as the 20-seed in the 165 bracket.
Brothers Brett and Braxton Plants also faced the elimination round to start their days at 190 and 215.
The two competed simultaneously on different mats during most of their matches and, fittingly, both won, clinching medals minutes apart.
Brett won by decision, and Braxton won by major decision.
“I’m pretty happy we both could do it,” said Brett Plants.
“It’s exciting,” Braxton said.
Braxton Plants won his fifth-round consolation match to advance to the consolation semifinals Saturday. Braxton pinned Durant’s Kamdyn Kraklio for the second time in the tournament.
Brett Plants will wrestle for seventh.
Belle Plaine’s Aidan Timm was defeated in the semifinals by Alburnett’s Preston Klostermann and will wrestle Saturday in the consolation semifinals.
Teammate Wade Sankot was defeated in the blood round, ending his season with a record of 23-4.
Four area wrestlers will battle for medal placement Saturday morning in a combined classes session.
