DES MOINES — Williamsburg’s Cael Moore did not start the state tournament in his senior season the way he’d hoped.
After receiving a first-round bye, Moore lost by a last-second takedown in his first match in the Class 2A 190-pound bracket.
What has he done since then?
Moore has more than redeemed that loss.
Friday night’s win by fall in the fourth-round consolations on day three of the Iowa High School Athletic Association Boys State Wrestling Tournament was his third dominating win by fall in a row.
The win clinches a medal for the Raiders senior, and that’s been his goal all season for finishing his wrestling career.
Moore never got down on himself after the early loss.
“I just had to be myself, and I knew I couldn’t quit with it being my last year,” said Moore. “I wanted to place, so I went out there and got it.”
Got it he did.
Moore was the first of three Raiders to win their fourth-round consolations by fall.
Carson Grier, at 215, pinned Fairfield’s Dre Smithburg in the first period.
Trenton Davies did the same at heavyweight.
Riker DeWitt started off the night for the Raiders with a 10-2 major decision over Winterset’s Kline Kiburz at 106. DeWitt was able to get a takedown in all three periods.
All four Raiders fell in their fifth-round consolation matches and will wrestle in the seventh place matches this morning.
Grier, at 215, had to medically forfeit his match due to injury, so it’s yet to be determined whether he will be able to wrestle.
If he can’t wrestle today, he’ll medal in eighth place.
