MARENGO — The Third of July festivities in Marengo began with its fourth annual 5K Run/Walk.
The race was filled with a lot of young people, and it was a beautiful morning for a race.
The race director, Tom Megchelsen, was happy with the turnout.
“I had 35 race day registrations forms, and we ran out and had to get more,” Megchelsen said.
The race serves as a fundraiser for Leanne’s School of Dance, located on the Marengo town square.
“Every four years they take a group of dancers on a trip. In 2021 they performed in the Macy’s Day Parade and plan to do the same in 2025,” Megchelsen said.
“I’ve had two daughters involved with Leanne’s, and this race is a great way to help out and is good for the community.“
Among the participants were several current and former Williamsburg cross county runners.
The race winner, Wes Hulseburg, is preparing for his first season as a member of the Wartburg cross country team this fall. He won with a time of 17:09.
Hulseburg was happy with his race and is looking forward to being a part of the Wartburg program.
“They’ve got a pretty talented group, and I am excited to be a part of that and get better,” Hulseberg said.
Hulseburg has been working on building a strong base this summer, running 60-65 miles a week, and said he’ll most likely build up to 70.
The overall female winner in the race was Kylee Frazier with a time of 22:51.
The race kicks off a busy day in Marengo, which was shortly followed by a car show.
