NORTH ENGLISH — Hot and hilly. Very hilly.
That’s a tough combination for any runner to battle, but it’s what all competitors faced at the English Valleys Invite Tuesday at Knoll Ridge Country Club.
“It’s super hilly, and these hills aren’t as fun to go down as most since they’re so steep,” Isaac Frazier said.
Frazier, an English Valleys sophomore, finished runner-up in the boys’ race with a time of 18:45.24.
As a freshman, Frazier qualified for state as an individual. It is the hope that Frazier not only qualify but go again with teammates this season.
Evan Koehn, who was close to qualifying last season, finished sixth Tuesday, and freshman Will Luers was fourth in the race.
We’re all three pretty close together,“ Frazier said. ”I feel we’re in a really good spot and we are going to do good the rest of the season.“
Coming off some summer injuries, Frazier also feels he still is building up some fitness.
“I dealt with a couple injuries this summer that have slowed me down some, but training is in a good spot now.”
Sigourney’s Troy Klett put together an impressive solo effort from the front, winning in 17:54.93. HLV-TC’s Allan Scott was 10th.
The Bears won the team title with 58 points.
English Valleys also had a runner-up finisher in the girls’ race in Anna Luers.
The Bears’ sophomore put together a strong finish on the last loop, going from fourth to second to finish in a time of 21:51.13.
“Pushing up the hills was key and just trying to keep going strong even though it was super hilly,” Luers said.
The ninth-ranked Bears in Class 1A won the team title with a low score of 24 points, with their top five finishing in the top 12. Addison Achenbach was second for the Bears, in seventh.
The team, who has also battled some injuries, hopes to continue to progress throughout the rest of the season and peak when it matters most.
“We are all working hard and working toward making it to state again,“ Luers said.
Hillcrest Academy’s Marie Yoder, an all-state finisher in 1A last season, won the race in 21:25.37. Belle Plaine’s Elyse Jacobi was 16th.
