GRINNELL — This fall, Imagine Grinnell is offering free trees to residents in Poweshiek County.
The effort is part of Imagine Grinnell’s ongoing work to strengthen the local tree canopy, support environmental sustainability and build a greener, healthier community, said Imagine Grinnell in a press release.
Beginning Aug. 4, residents in Poweshiek County will be eligible to sign up for free trees.
Trees available this year are fall fiesta sugar maple, autumn brilliance serviceberry, eastern redbud, skyline honey locust, chinkapin oak, autumn gold ginkgo, Princeton elm, espresso Kentucky coffee tree, hophornbeam, wildfire black gum, spring snow crabapple, white pine and Norway spruce.
Conifer trees (white pine and Norway spruce) will be available for pick up Sept. 12. The remaining shade and lower growing trees will be available for pick up Oct. 10.
Anyone interested in fruit trees will have the opportunity to apply for them during spring 2026.
To sign up for a free tree, complete the Google form at forms.gle/GmnqSbYDmRtFQ2kCA or call 641-236-1562 or visit imaginegrinnell.org.
Anyone planting a tree must contact Iowa One Call at 1-800-292-8989 to locate utilities within a 20-foot radius of the planting site and get any permits required by cities.
Plan for tree care, including consistent watering and mulching during the first few years to ensure healthy growth.
