Fall is upon us, and with it comes exciting progress across our community. I’d like to share a few updates from recent City Council meetings and ongoing projects around town.
Gateway Park master plan
Jacob Slings, Director of Iowa County Conservation, presented the Gateway Park Master Plan to the City Council. He’s currently applying for a grant to fund Phase 1, which includes an improved boat ramp, designated boat and handicap parking, and trail upgrades. If approved, work could begin soon.
Phase 2 — still in the planning stage — would add a kayak/canoe launch, rental facility, expanded parking and a water quality basin.
Ordinance amendment: court use
The Council has scheduled a public hearing for Oct. 8 at 6 p.m. to consider an ordinance amendment regarding use of tennis and basketball courts. The proposed change would prohibit bicycling, rollerblading, skateboarding and roller skating on these courts located on city property.
This measure aims to preserve the integrity of the playing surfaces for all users.
Infrastructure improvements
Our wastewater treatment project is officially underway. Crews will begin draining the north lagoon this week, and a new driveway has been installed to accommodate construction equipment.
Additional work includes: televising sewer lines on the north side of town, extending the water main on Howard Avenue and clearing large logs at the yard waste site. Residents are welcome to take firewood as needed
Highway 212 repairs
Many of you have noticed patching work along Western Avenue. This section of Highway 212 is maintained by the Iowa Department of Transportation, and we appreciate their efforts to keep it in good condition.
