WILLIAMSBURG — Cooper Bott and Robbie Allison teed off in the same foursome Monday for the Williamsburg boys golf team in a WaMaC conference dual against Clear Creek Amana at Stone Creek Golf Club.
They’re more than just teammates. They are also first cousins, and they’ve have been playing the game together for a long time.
“I’ve been playing golf with Robbie since I was probably seven years old,” Cooper Bott said.
Golf runs in both families. Cooper’s older sister, Jaisel, was the top golfer on the girls’ state-qualifying team last season. Robbie’s sister, Rubianne, is leading the girls’ team this season.
Both families have grown closer through the game of golf and have left their mark on the program in recent years.
“It’s been great having a whole family do golf,” Cooper Bott said. “My grandma loves it. She can just watch us and hop back and front between us.”
Cooper has also been able to build a strong relationship with his sister, Jaisel, through the game.
“I’ll probably call her after this and tell her how I did, discuss the round and she’ll tell me how to make some putts, hopefully,” Cooper Bott said with a laugh.
Cooper and Robbie posted the lowest scores of the evening Monday and have been leading the way for the boys’ team this season so far.
Both golfers have made improvements statistically from last season.
“Watching him grow has been amazing,” Cooper Bott said of Robbie. “He’s grown into such a great golfer.”
Bott shot a 39 on the nine-hole par 36 for medalist honors. After three-straight bogeys, Bot finished the round with five straight pars.
“It was a good feeling hitting the greens in regulations,” Cooper Bott said. “Just came up short on a few putts, but if that’s all I’m missing, I’ll take that everyday.”
Allison was two strokes behind Bott with a 41 and birdied the opening hole.
Rogan Ackerman finished third shooting a 44, to give the Raiders the top three finishers in the dual.
The Raiders may not have shot as low as they wanted, but they did get their first dual win of the season, defeating the Clippers, 170-182.
“It’s great. We’ve been coming up short (in the two previous duals), so getting a win will definitely propel us heading into Wednesday and Friday,” Cooper Bott said.
A big week awaits the Raiders, as they host their TaterTough Invitational Wednesday and travel to Moravia Friday in a big tournament field. Both will be 18 holes.
