Each fall, the Greater Poweshiek County Foundation honors individuals, community leaders, business owners, volunteers and others for their tireless effort in making their communities better through volunteerism, community service and outreach and serving the area through their businesses.
This year, the Greater Poweshiek County Foundation honored four individuals, two businesses and a group of food pantry volunteers.
Mary Lindberg
Mary Lindberg was nominated for her tireless leadership and current and past commitment to many nonprofits and causes in Grinnell including Tiger Scholarship Fund, JMP Early Childhood Iowa, Connected PTO, Grinnell Area Arts Council, Grinnell-Newburg School Foundation and Friends of International Students.
Lindberg takes her volunteer service seriously while bringing joy and valuable insight to every initiative.
Kate Slater
Kate Slater, Director of Grinnell Housing Authority, was honored for her spirit of giving.
Slater was nominated for her tireless dedication serving community members facing homelessness or housing insecurity. Her compassionate approach in serving clients paired with her ability to foster community involvement to advocate for housing solutions make her a powerful voice for some of the most vulnerable members of our community.
Slater’s spirit of giving touches many families, often when they feel most hopeless. Her depth of understanding and caring, her ability to connect families to helpful resources, and her tenacious yet kind approach to solving problems are just a few of the traits that define her Spirit of Giving.
Fran Conn
Fran Conn was nominated for her dedication to supporting community in whatever capacity is needed. She has many years of service of thoughtful leadership on boards and committees, and she is exceptionally generous with her time to pitch in for whatever community activity is happening, doing whatever task needs to be done.
Conn’s caring and compassionate approach to leadership, both as a business owner and as a community leader, have impacted countless initiatives. She is currently active as a Chamber Ambassador and she brings her welcoming Spirit of Giving to every visit and every volunteer activity.
Brown Shoe Fit
Kyle and Duane at Brown Shoe Fit were nominated for the many ways they step up in the community, but especially for their leadership and partnership with the Grinnell-Newburg School Foundation on the Shoes for the Sole project, ensuring kids at Grinnell Middle School have good shoes on their feet to help them succeed. T
heir service is amazing, second only to their generosity and kindness.
Ann Igoe
Ann Igoe's spirit of giving is second only to her spirited passion for the Grinnell Historical Museum.
Igoe was nominated for her dedication to bringing the new museum space to life. Her enthusiasm for the project is palpable and she has given countless hours of her time to guide the campaign, oversee construction, apply for grants and plan for the future.
She received the Spirit of Giving award inside the new space at 703 First Ave. and the Foundation got a sneak peek of all the progress and insider information about what amazing things are to come.
Dayton Meat Products
With spirits abounding for Halloween, the Foundation recognized the generous Spirit of Giving of Dayton Meat Products in Malcom.
The team at Dayton Meat Products is an invaluable partner of the Malcom Food Pantry and other food banks in the county, supplying high quality, delicious products for families in need.
They are also generous of their time and support for community events with ideas, volunteers, and in-kind items. They recently hosted a customer appreciation dinner and accepted freewill donations be directed to the Malcom Food Pantry and then matched the total amount raised.
Community partners like Dayton Meat Products share their generous Spirit of Giving in so many ways.
Malcom Food Pantry
The team of volunteers at Malcom Food Pantry generously give their time to unload delivery trucks, ensure the shelves of the pantry remain stocked, cheerfully serve food pantry shoppers and go above and beyond to build relationships with their community members.
With no paid staff at the pantry, this committed team makes sure things go smoothly for the weekly food distributions.
