Grinnell hospital addresses rise in colon cancer
Mar. 6, 2024 9:22 am
GRINNELL -- UnityPoint Health-Grinnell is drawing attention to a concerning trend: a rise in colorectal cancer cases among individuals under 50.
Despite a general decline in colorectal cancer for those aged 50 and older, the younger demographic is experiencing an upward trajectory in diagnoses.
According to a press release from UnityPoint, the exact cause of this rise is unclear, lifestyle factors play a significant role. Highly processed diets, exposure to environmental toxins, excessive alcohol consumption, lack of exercise, obesity and smoking are identified as risk factors contributing to the trend.
UnityPoint Health recommends screening for colon cancer beginning at age 45. Individuals with high-risk factors, such as inflammatory bowel disease, family or personal history of colon cancer or polyps or Lynch syndrome, are advised to undergo screening earlier.
Symptoms of colon cancer may include rectal bleeding, blood in the stool, changes in bowel habits or stool shape, a sense of incomplete bowel emptying, abdominal cramping or pain, decreased appetite, weight loss, weakness and fatigue.
