GRINNELL — UnityPoint Health-Grinnell Regional Medical Center is enhancing safety measures to ensure the well-being of both patients and team members.
Recognizing that the Emergency Department is a fast-paced environment where situations can change quickly, GRMC has introduced new initiatives designed to reduce risk and create a safer, more supportive space for care.
With support from a $50,000 grant from Grinnell Mutual Group Foundation, GRMC is planning two important upgrades to the emergency department. The first is the conversion of a regular treatment room into a second safety room, featuring a coiling door barrier that allows team members to quickly secure monitors, cords, sharps and cabinets when needed.
The second is the redesign of the emergency department’s patient bathroom with safety fixtures, accessories and door system to enhance privacy and mitigate potential safety risks.
The total cost of this project is expected to be about $122,000.
“Providing the best possible emergency care in a safe and respectful environment is critically important for the patients experiencing mental health issues,” said David-Paul Cavazos, president.
“Our ED care team makes every effort to provide an environment where patients diagnosed with mental health disorders can be as safe as possible while the team assesses them, stabilizes their medication if appropriate and prepares them for discharge or appropriate placement in a facility for further treatment. With GMG’s support, GRMC can create a safer environment in the ED.”
“The Grinnell Mutual Group Foundation exists to support our local communities, so they remain vibrant places to live, work and grow. The GMG Foundation is pleased to provide this grant to the UnityPoint Health — Grinnell Regional Medical Center Foundation for facility upgrades that will improve the safety and well-being of the most vulnerable patients and those who serve them,” said Grinnell Mutual CEO and GMG Foundation Board Chair, Jeff Menary.
“We know our community is better when we work together. With our contribution, we encourage other local organizations and individuals to join us with this important funding for the hospital’s emergency department upgrades.”
Grinnell Mutual is a longtime partner of GRMC, supporting several previous projects. Most recently supporting the Delivering Our Future campaign for the expansion and renovation of GRMC’s obstetrics department.
“We are grateful for the continued partnership with Grinnell Mutual. Their generous donation is helping GRMC provide a safe and respectful environment in the ED,” said Donna Fischer, GRMC Foundation’s Director of Development.
“We deeply appreciate Grinnell Mutual’s support for this vital project.”
Donations of all sizes are welcome, and 100% of every dollar donated to the GRMC Foundation stays local.
