MARENGO — Caleb Haack delivered a no-hitter and the Iowa Valley baseball won its fourth game in its last five Wednesday night against HLV.
“It was a fantastic game from Caleb,” Iowa Valley head coach Sam Rohovit said.
Haack also added nine strikeouts in his no-hit performance.
“I want to thank my coaches for helping me get here,” Haack said.
“We work hard as a team and it shows.”
Haack has become a key contributor in all four sports he participates in for the Tigers and will look to do the same heading into his senior year in the fall.
Things got started off in the first with an RBI single from Haack in the bottom of the inning.
The Tigers added seven in the third to extend their lead to 8-0.
RBI hits from Mason Hoyt, Nolan Kriegel and Owen Bral highlighted the inning.
HLV added two runs in the fourth.
The Warriors got two on base via walk and were able to capitalize on a few errors and both scored.
Pitcher Max Henstorf pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the fourth, making it 8-2 heading to the fifth.
The Tigers added five in the fifth, highlighted by a Bral RBI double and ended the game by being up over 10 runs after five innings.
HLV was able to get its first win of the season this past Monday against English Valleys, 17-6.
“This season hasn’t started off the way we wanted,” HLV head coach Kyle Henstorf said.
“We have a lot of younger guys and are still working through positions”
HLV baseball, as the softball team did, merged with Tri-County for the season.
The Warriors face off against Keota Friday.
“I feel confident going into to it and feel it will be a good game for us,” Henstorf added.
Iowa Valley faces off against Class 1A No. 2 Lynnville-Sully Friday.
“I feel great for the guys,” Rohovit said on their play so far this week.
HLV AT IOWA VALLEY SOFTBALL
Simultaneous to the baseball action on the field right next door, as one could say, HLV defeated Iowa Valley 10-3.
“They made some nice plays,” Iowa Valley head coach Monica Miller said.
“We just didn’t put the ball in play much.”
The Tigers had won three straight after an extra innings victory against Montezuma Monday night.
In the game, the Tigers scored their first in the sixth and three more in the seventh to make it 4-4.
Four unanswered runs in the top of the eighth sealed the victory.
The highlight of the night for the Warriors came from eighth grader Karley Moore who hit a three-run home run to extend the HLV lead.
“We hit the ball well and cleaned up our defense (from previous games),” HLV head coach Grace Parrott said.
As she does most games, Hailey Jack pitched the whole game for the Warriors.
“She’s been very dependable for us, she always hits her spots and does a great job,” Parrott added.
The Tigers will look to rebound Friday against Lynnville-Sully and will also face off against Columbus in West Branch Saturday.
HLV faces Keota Friday and will play two games at Tri-County high school against Grand View Christian and Lone Tree.
