BROOKLYN — The BGM boys track and field team has low numbers this season, but its goal at the beginning of the year was to get an event back to the state meet.
Those expectations have not changed.
As the postseason begins, the Bears have the chance in several events.
A part of almost all of those events is Dakota Heishman.
“My season has been off to a decent start,” Heishman said. “We have a lot of young kids, but we are putting them in the right spots and they are definitely stepping up big time.”
The focus for Heishman this season has been the hurdle events.
As of Saturday, Heishman sits at 25th in Class 1A in the 110-meter hurdles, 31st in the 400 hurdles and 24th as a leg in the shuttle hurdle relay.
“My main focus this year has been hurdles more than anything, knowing that is my strong suit,” said Heishman. “My expectations going into this season were pretty high.”
Heishman is also a leg on the team’s 20th ranked 4x100 team and 29th ranked 4x200.
Nathan Findlay is ranked 22nd in the long jump.
Heishman, a senior, feels he has grown as a leader this season.
“I knew that it was very important for me to be a key leader on the team and hold everyone accountable,” Heishman said.
The Bears now set their sights on the postseason, which begins Tuesday at the South Iowa Cedar League meet and has a lot of firepower at the top.
Next are state-qualifying meets May 15. BGM will be headed to Lynnville-Sully to try and get an event to Des Moines.
“Going into districts I am feeling pretty confident with our relay teams and with myself,” said Heishman. “Day after day, we put in so much work in hope to make it to state this year.”
