Conditions were less then ideal Monday statewide as boys’ golf district meets played out to determine the fields for next week’s state tournaments.
Two area golfers powered through to qualify as individuals — English Valleys’ Gage Heyne and Williamsburg’s Robbie Allison.
Class 3A: West Delaware
MANCHESTER — Allison and teammate Boston Altenhofen competed in the Class 3A district at Pin Oak Pub and Links Monday.
Only the top two individuals not on qualifying teams — plus additional golfers who tie for the top two spots — advance to state.
Allison rose to the challenge to finish fifth overall with a 79 on the par-71 course.
“It was a very tough day to score, but Robbie really battled and played well,” Williamsburg coach Brad Schaefer said.
Allison will compete in the 3A state meet Tuesday and Wednesday at Pheasant Ridge Golf Course in Cedar Falls.
Altenhofen finished 34th with a 91.
Class 1A: Wapello
WAPELLO — The BGM boys, HLV-TC’s Peyton Roth and Heyne all competed in the 1A district at Heritage Oaks and Country Club.
Gusty winds and hard rain made the challenging course and its narrow fairways even more difficult.
Heyne shot a 78 on the par-72 with three birdies, for a runner-up finish.
“Gage was stone cold,” English Valleys coach Larry Pohren said. “He played each shot with thought, pace and precision.”
“He was able to stay out of trouble and was remarkably steady on a day when others could not overcome the conditions. I am extremely proud of him and his mental strength.”
Heyne will compete in the 1A state meet next Tuesday and Wednesday at South Hills Golf Course in Waterloo.
BGM finished ninth as a team, led by a 88 from Beckett Rhoads. Roth shot a 92 to finish 32nd.
Class 1A: Newman Catholic
MASON CITY — Belle Plaine’s Cooper Hoey competed at Highland Park Golf Course. Hoey shot a 99, finishing tied for 59th.
