BELLE PLAINE — Near constant rain through 18 holes of golf is never ideal, but English Valleys’ Gage Heyne finished strong to earn medalist honors Friday in the Belle Plaine Invitational at Belle Plaine Country Club.
Heyne was seven strokes over par after eight holes, but after that, Heyne shot two under par for a 77 on the par-72 course.
"The game of golf is not a sprint, it is an endurance game for the mind," Heyne said following his round. “This was really shown today as I shot 43 on the front and came back in 34.”
“I was able to keep my cool and continue to proceed forward with a positive mindset.”
Heyne birdied holes 10 and 16 on the back-nine.
Heyne’s teammate, Tyler Lortz, wasn’t too far behind. Lortz finished fourth with a 84 on the day.
The Bears’ sophomore has shown consistency and improvement this season and will certainly be an all-conference contender come the conference meet Monday.
“I believe Gage and Tyler both have shots at being all-conference,” English Valleys coach Larry Pohren said. “Tyler is just playing really solid. Each meet, I have a general idea of where he is going to finish and it does not matter the course.”
Lortz believes that qualifying for state as an individual is within reach too if he plays to his potential.
As a team, the English Valleys boys finished runner-up with a 416.
The Belle Plaine boys finished third with a 426, and were led by Cooper Hoey, who finished eighth with a 90.
Hoey has been a consistent top finisher for the Plainsmen in his sophomore season.
Quentin O’Leary finished 10th with a 104.
Belle Plaine and English Valleys will now get ready for the South Iowa Cedar League Monday at Oskaloosa Public Golf.
On the girls’ side, English Valleys’ Taylor Mikesell finished sixth with a 118.
The Bears did not have a team score on the day with just two golfers. Nicole Murphy was ninth with a 136.
“The girls have not had a full team, but maybe once this year,” said Pohren. “Track and injuries have kept us from really developing. ”All I have stressed to the girls this year is mental toughness and playing the course, not the girls in your group.“
For Belle Plaine, Jadie Dahlquist was seventh with a 135, as they shot a team score of 609.
The SICL girls’ meet will be May 12 at Oskaloosa Public Golf, with a 9 a.m. start time.
“Overall, this has been quite a productive year,” Pohren said on the season as a whole. “I could not ask them to do more than they already have.”
