FORT DODGE — English Valleys’ Gage Heyne capped off a stellar senior season with an All-State fourth-place finish in the 1A boys’ field at the State Cross-Country Championships Saturday at the Lakeside Municipal Golf Course.
Heyne was with race winner Gavin Grunhovd midway through, but the North Iowa senior pulled away to win by eight seconds.
“I got out too fast and my legs hit lactate,” Heyne said. “It’s still a very solid time for me, and we got blessed with a really good day today.”
The Bears’ senior won seven races this season, recording personal bests on almost every course he raced this year.
Next up for Heyne is competing in the NXR Heartland Regional Saturday in Sioux Falls.
“Gage has been a huge part of our program with encouraging kids,” English Valleys head coach Luke Caster said. “He’s been a great role model and puts in the work.
“It’s going to be weird not having him next season, but I know he has a bright future ahead of him.”
Heyne’s teammate in the race, Isaac Frazier, placed 90th in a time of 17:53.
The Bears’ freshman caps off a strong end of the season, and will be a runner to watch for the Bears moving forward.
HLV-TC’s Peyton Roth concluded his senior season with a 74th place finish, running a time of 17:45.
“I came through my first mile a little slower than I wanted, and it kind of messed with me the rest of the race,” Roth said. “It was a great experience and I was really blessed to be able to make it here.“
Lake Mills captured the team title in the race with a score of 88. South Iowa Cedar League member Lynnville-Sully finished 14th as a team.
