SEARSBORO — It was a chilly one at the SICL cross-country championships Tuesday at the Big Springs Shooting Complex.
English Valleys Gage Heyne won the individual boys’ title leading from start to finish in a time of 16:37.
“Going in I knew what I needed to do to win,” Heyne said. “Over the past six years I’ve put in all the work I’ve needed to do, so I came into this race with confidence knowing that I won last year as well.”
Running in the chilly weather was good practice for the weather that may come in the postseason.
“It gives me a gauge on what clothes I need to wear and how I need to warm up,” Heyne added.
Coming in fourth in the boys’ race was HLV-TC’s Peyton Roth with a new personal best of 17:28.
Roth has been coming on strong the last few weeks, and that was put on display Tuesday night.
“I felt good all race,” Roth said. “I knew I needed to push myself to earn what I wanted in a top five finish and I got that.”
With Roth’s improvement and confidence, he can put himself in a position to be an individual state qualifier at next Thursday’s race.
Belle Plaine’s Luke Eichhorn earned second team all-conference honors, placing sixth, and was followed by English Valleys’ Isaac Frazier and Evan Koehn who placed eighth and ninth.
BGM’s Carter Corona and Iowa Valley’s Jeffrey Crawford both earned honorable mention all-conference honors, finishing 11th and 12th.
English Valleys did not have a scoring team all season, but two football players ran with the team at times to give the Bears the five runners they needed to score.
The Bears finished second behind Lynnville-Sully.
The girls race was all about the battle between fourth-ranked Class 1A English Valleys and sixth-ranked Lynnville-Sully.
The Bears put four in the top 12, but the Hawks had five in what was a close team battle from start to finish.
The Hawks placed two in the top four, including race winner Mandeesa Vos, who gave them the slight edge on the night; the Hawks beat the Bears by six.
Anna Luers placed second for the Bears, and Addison and Aubrey Achenbach earned second-team all-conference honors.
“I don’t think all our girls ran their best race, but Lynnville-Sully definitely ran well tonight, and they earned it,” English Valleys head coach Luke Caster said.
Montezuma’s Ellen Cook finished 16th for the Braves.
