VICTOR — A pivotal coaching moment in the top of the first was all the Warriors needed to turn things around after getting down 3-0. The HLV softball defeated Springville 15-5 in six innings Wednesday night.
“Mistakes happen, and we can’t let them get us down,” HLV head coach Grace Parrott said.
Springville was very aggressive on the base pads and laid down multiple bunts in the first causing several errors for the Warriors.
Hannah March brought in a run on a single.
After the Orioles scored three runs, Coach Parrott called time out and brought the whole infield to the mound to circle up.
“I just needed to get the girls to calm down,” Parrott said.
After the meeting, the Warriors got two straight outs to escape the top of the inning.
The chaos continued in the bottom of the inning, and the Warriors scored seven.
RBIs from Raelene Hawkins, Hailey Jack, Karley Moore and Aaliyah Cooper (via bunt) scored four, and three more runs scored off errors.
The Orioles added two more in the third, making it 7-5 after an overthrow and a wild pitch.
The Warriors matched that, scoring two off another successful bunt from Cooper and an RBI single from Ayla Hall, making the score 9-5 after three.
RBI singles from Hawkins and Erilea Kupka extended the lead to 12-5 after four.
The Warriors added three more in the sixth, and the 10-run rule ended the game an inning early.
The play of the game came from the bat of Jack in the bottom of the sixth.
Jack launched a solo home run over the left center field fence, and the whole dugout of teammates gathered at home plate to celebrate.
The Warriors finished with 16 hits; four players contributed multiple RBIs.
“This has been an amazing group to coach this year. They work super well together,” Parrott said.
“They’re not ready to be done yet.”
The Warriors will face Wapello Friday with a spot in the Regional final on the line.
