Max Henstorf was solid on the mound and Boston York and Cole Fontinel delivered at the plate, leading HLV's baseball team to a 6-5 win over Colfax-Mingo Tuesday, May 30, at Victor.
Henstorf allowed just three singles and one earned run in six innings of work, walking five batters and striking out seven.
The junior right-hander left the game with a 6-4 lead, and senior Camden Kennebeck came on to work a hitless seventh inning to preserve the Warriors' victory.
York and Fontinel provided the bulk of HLV's offense with two hits and two RBI apiece. One of York's hits was a double.
Peyton Roth added two hits, Keegan Gorsh chipped in a RBI single and Henstorf helped himself at bat, going 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored.
Unfortunately, that win stands alone so far this season for the Warriors, who in four other outings have lost a pair of one-run games to BGM and North Mahaska, and got blown out by Montezuma and Lynnville-Sully.
Season opener
The 2023 season opener Monday, May 22, at Victor, saw HLV fall behind BGM 6-0, rally to tie the score 6-6 and then give up a late run to get beat, 7-6.
All of the Warrior's runs came in the fifth inning on the strength of a two-run single by Henstorf, and RBI hits by Kyler and Keegan Gorsh.
Henstorf finished the game 3-for-4 at the plate, and Kyler Gorsh was 2-for-4. York, Fontinel and Bryer Jack added singles as HLV out hit BGM, 10-4.
Kennebeck was the losing pitcher despite giving up just two hits and no earned runs over 4-2/3 innings, striking out seven.
Pitching duel
Another one-run loss fell upon the Warriors Wednesday, May 24, at New Sharon, as North Mahaska survived a pitcher's duel in eight innings, 2-1.
Henstorf threw 6-2/3 innings of three-hit ball for HLV, allowing one run and striking out 10 before giving way to Keegan Gorsh, who in the final 1-1/3 innings gave up the winning run on two hits and two walks.
Warhawks sophomore Nash Smith matched Henstorf's strikeout total, scattering six hits in a complete game performance.
York and Kyler Gorsh accounted for four of HLV's hits, going 2-for-3 apiece, and York scored the team's lone run in the fourth inning to tie the game, 1-1.
Walks, errors hurt
Six errors and eight walks led to 11 unearned runs and a 14-5 HLV loss to Montezuma Friday, May 26, at Victor.
The Warriors used nine walks of their own to manufacture most of their runs, collecting just four hits in the game — the Braves had seven — including a RBI double by Fontinel.
Hawks fly
Lynnville-Sully jumped on HLV starter Kennebeck for eight hits and 12 runs in the first two innings en route to a 10-run rule, 14-1, victory Wednesday, May 31, at Sully.
Brody Sternhagen drove in the Warriors' lone run on a fielder's choice. HLV had three hits — doubles by York and Fontinel, and a single by Henstorf.
