It’s been an up, down, up start to the 2023 season for the HLV softball team, who through the first two weeks and six opponents have compiled a 3-3 record.
Nip BGM
The Warriors scored one run in each of the first, second and third innings and made those runs stand up in a season-opening 3-2 victory over the Bears Monday, May 22, at Victor.
Junior pitcher Hailey Jack held BGM to five hits, walked two and struck out six in a complete game performance, helping herself at the plate with a single and two RBI.
HLV managed just three other hits in the game — all singles, by Ema Roberts, Mckenzie Kempf and Heather Schafbuch.
Lose to Warhawks
The Warriors came up on the short end of a 5-1 score against North Mahaska Wednesday, May 24, at New Sharon.
HLV plated its lone run in the seventh inning on an RBI double by freshman Ralene Hawkins. Roberts, Jack and Kempf added hits.
Jack took the loss, giving up three earned runs on six hits. She walked two and struck out five.
Blanked by Braves
HLV was a 9-0 victim of Montezuma Friday, May 26, at Victor.
Jack surrendered 11 hits to the Braves, but only three of the nine runs scored on her were earned as the Warriors committed five errors.
Roberts had two of HLV’s four hits, one a double. Jack and Schafbuch singled.
Game to forget
Colfax-Mingo brought their bats to Victor Tuesday, May 30, erupting for 29 hits in a 28-10 demolition of the Warriors.
Jack lasted just 2-1/3 innings in the circle, getting roughed up for 20 hits and 16 earned runs.
HLV had 10 hits of its own, scoring all their runs in the third inning on two RBI doubles by Kempf and Hawkins, a two RBI single by Jack and one RBI base hits by Schafbuch, Ema Roberts, Kyla Roberts and Addy Shaull.
Rally past Hawks
The Warriors rallied twice to beat Lynnville-Sully 6-5 and end a three-game losing streak Wednesday, May 31, at Sully.
Trailing 2-0, HLV scored three runs in the fifth inning to grab a 3-2 lead, and after falling behind again 5-3, put up three more runs in the seventh.
Kempf, Jack and Hawkins drove in two runs apiece for the Warriors — Kempf and Jack with doubles, and Hawkins on a pair of singles.
Ema Roberts and Kyla Roberts both went 2-for-3 at the plate, and Mackenzie Allee singled.
Jack earned the win, scattering eight hits over seven innings and striking out five. Only one of the Hawks’ were earned as HLV booted the ball six times.
Walk past Tri-County
The Warriors were out hit 8-6 but parlayed 11 walks into seven runs and an 11-5 win over the Trojans Friday, June 2, at Victor.
Mackenzie Allee had two of HLV’s six hits and drove in three runs, Shaull ripped an RBI single and scored twice, and winning pitcher Jack cracked a three-run homer.
