HLV-TC, BGM receive first-round byes

All six Class 1A area teams were placed in one region, as the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union released regional softball pairings Friday.

HLV-TC and BGM, two of the top four teams in the South Iowa Cedar League this season, received first-round byes in 1A Region 4.

Four other area teams will play their first-round games in Region 4 Monday, July 7, all as visiting teams.

At the top of the bracket, Iowa Valley will play Lynnville-Sully, a familiar SICL opponent for the Tigers. Lynnville-Sully won the regular season matchup between the two, 4-3.

Belle Plaine, still searching for their first win of the season, will play Melcher-Dallas.

In the bottom half of the bracket, Montezuma visits Hillcrest Academy and English Valleys will travel to play Highland.

HLV-TC will play the winner of Belle Plaine-Melcher Dallas Wednesday, July 9.

BGM awaits the winner of Montezuma-Hillcrest Academy. If the Bravettes prevail, it would be a rematch with BGM, who won the regular season matchup, 5-3.

Class 3A No. 2 Williamsburg received the top-seed in 3A Region 2, as they look to advance to the state tournament for the sixth-straight season.

The Raiders will face Vinton-Shellsburg in the first-round Thursday, July 10. The Raiders beat Vinton-Shellsburg in the regular season by scores of 8-0, and 13-1.

Williamsburg also will see a familiar opponent in the second round if both the Raiders and Benton Community advance.
