COLFAX — They started the meet with a win and capped off the night with a win.
The HLV-TC girls track and field team captured six events titles en route to a South Iowa Cedar League team title Tuesday at Colfax-Mingo High School.
The team score was close throughout, but the Warriors pulled away late with 116 1/2 points.
“I think coming from two small schools (HLV and Tri-County), for us to come together and win means a lot to us,” Warriors’ senior Ema Roberts said. “We’ve been working really hard, so I think it just shows how we’ve been training to get here.”
Roberts, Drake Relays runner-up in the high jump, started the day off clearing five feet, seven inches for the fourth time this season to give the Warriors 10 points.
Halfway through the meet, it was a tight race between four teams, but one event flipped the momentum to the Warriors for the rest of the meet.
Sisters Emery and Ayla Hall, went one-two in the 800-meter run. The 18 team points gave the Warriors a lead they would hold onto until the end, closing with a win in the 4x400-meter relay.
Aaliyah Cooper added a victory in the 400-hurdles in the back half of the meet.
“Us Tri-County seniors, it’s our first time winning a conference title, so it’s pretty cool we got to win one before we’re done,” senior Ayla Hall said.
“We wouldn’t have been able to do it without everyone,” Cooper said.
With the merger in athletics of the two SICL schools, the Warriors have become more competitive across several sports.
None more than this year’s track and field team, which has plenty of potential to do some damage at state with a blend of relays and individual events.
“It’s super exciting, and I think we are peaking at the right time,” Roberts said. “We’re finally seeing the results we want to see, but there’s still so much potential to be better.”
English Valleys came in second in the team race with 104 points, followed by Lynnville-Sully with 103 and North Mahaska 101.
Other notable area performances
• English Valleys’ Ava Gehrking swept the 100 and 200 titles in dominant fashion, and was also a leg on the Bears’ winning sprint medley relay quartet. Gehrking is tied for the fastest time posted so far this season in Class 1A in the 200.
• Iowa Valley’s Lydia Kriegel swept the throwing events for the Tigers. Kriegel is currently ranked in the top five in 1A in both shot put and discus.
• Belle Plaine, BGM and Montezuma all took home one relay title on the evening — Belle Plaine in the 4x100, BGM in the shuttle hurdle and Montezuma in the 4x200.
