HLV-TC girls give strong performances
Nielsen breaks through in high jump, clears 5-4.25

Conference meet week is here for the track and field season. The South Iowa Cedar League meet is Tuesday and the WaMaC meet Thursday.
Here is a look at a few area meet results from this week as teams prep for the postseason stretch.
Belle Plaine Co-ed Invitational
BELLE PLAINE — The English Valleys girls took home the team title with 167 points Tuesday, winning nine events.
Taylor Mikesell continued a solid season in the throwing events, winning the shot put with a heave of 33 feet, nine inches and also placed second in discus.
Belle Plaine scored 97 team points on the girls’ side.
The Plainsmen girls won the shuttle hurdle relay.
The Plainsmen boys took the team title, with 188 points.
Lane Vokoun jumped 21 feet, 7 1/2 inches in the meet, putting him top five in 1A, as of Saturday.
Trojan Relays
TAMA — The Montezuma girls won three relays Tuesday in Tama. The Bravettes crossed the finish line first in the 4x200 relay, sprint medley and distance medley relays.
The time of 1:53.84 in the 4x200, was a season best.
The BGM girls also took home a relay title, winning the shuttle hurdle in 1:14.74.
Sigourney Co-ed
SIGOURNEY — The HLV-TC girls continued their great season with the team title at Sigourney Tuesday, with 123 points.
Ayla Hall won the 400-meter, Emery Hall the 800, Aaliyah Cooper, in the 400-hurdles, and Ema Roberts, in the high jump, won individual titles for the Warriors.
The Warriors’ winning distance medley time of 4:19.64, ranks second in 1A as of Saturday.
On the boys’ side, English Valleys won five events, highlighted by a victory in the long jump from Deshon Anderson.
The Bears’ junior has emerged as a leader in the event this season and currently sits in the top 20 in Class 1A.
Vinton-Shellsburg Co-ed
VINTON — The Iowa Valley boys won four events in Vinton Tuesday, in a field with all bigger schools.
Caleb Haack swept the 100 and 200, winning the 200 with a personal best of 22.10.
The Tigers also won the 4x400 relay, and Josh Read cleared six feet in the high jump for the win.
Notable runner-up finishes came from Jeffrey Crawford in the 400, running 50.92, and Chance Hoyt in the 400-hurdles, running a new best of 56.43.
On the girls’ side, Iowa Valley finished runner-up in the distance medley and in the high jump from Kennedy Thiessen.
Lydia Kriegel swept the throwing events, breaking the 40-feet barrier in shot put.
EBF Rocket Relays
EDDYVILLE — The Montezuma boys took home two event titles in Eddyville Tuesday.
David Rose continued a solid season in the sprints with a win in the 100, and the Braves also won the 4x200 relay.
Grinnell Invite
GRINNELL — The Williamsburg girls finished runner-up in Grinnell Tuesday with 68 1/2 team points.
The Raiders won four events and had other notable performances, including a season best in the distance medley in 4:18.44.
Ava Hocker made her 400-hurdles debut, winning in 1:05.53, putting her top five in 3A in the event.
Ailea Wetjen also ran a personal best 25.70 in the 200.
On the boys’ side, the Raiders won five events, including the 4x 400 relay.
Albert Bamrick cleared six feet, three inches for the win in high jump. Rayce Heitman jumped 21 feet, 9 inches in long jump.
It is Heitman’s first time competing in long jump since his freshman season, and he’s already top 15 in 3A.
Adam Arp won the 100 and 200 wheelchair events.
Ekstrand Relays
WAYLAND — HLV-TC’s Aiden Van Waus ran two season bests in Wayland Thursday.
Van Waus finished runner-up in the 400-meter in 51.91 and took the 400-hurdles crown in 57.90.
Sean McCulloch added a victory for the Warriors in the high jump, clearing six feet, one inch.
For the HLV-TC girls, Emery Hall jumped into the top 10 in 1A in the 800, running the distance in 2:21.96.
Ema Roberts cleared five feet, seven inches for the third-time this season in the high jump.
Pacha Relays
TIFFIN — The Williamsburg girls finished runner-up to Clear Creek Amana Thursday with 145 team points.
Freshman Ellie Nielsen tied the school record in the high jump in the indoor season, and finally had her breakthrough moment.
Nielsen cleared 5 feet, 4 1/4 inches to stand alone at the top of the record books and near the top of 3A.
Ailea Wetjen swept the 100 and 200 and also anchored the Raiders’ winning 4x100 relay.
Channing Becker ran a big personal best in the 3,000 with a time of 10:43.92, jumping to the top 10 in 3A.
The Williamsburg boys improved their sprint medley relay, getting the win in 1:33.40. The time is ranked third statewide as of Saturday.
BGM Co-ed Relays
The BGM Co-ed relays were canceled Friday due to weather.
The meet would have been the last tuneup before conference for several teams, as they are headed to Colfax-Mingo Tuesday.
