HLV’s Sternhagen is in Kirkwood spotlight
Jan. 4, 2024 11:46 am
Brody Sternhagen, a senior at HLV High School, is in the spotlight in Kirkwood’s spring newsletter. The Q&A is reproduced below.
When did you start taking college credit classes?
I started taking college credit classes the second semester of my freshman year.
Which courses and/or academies have you enjoyed the most and why?
The courses that I have enjoyed the most were my Introduction to Business and Principles of Marketing courses. I enjoyed these courses the most because I am very interested in learning about business because it is what I plan to do in the future.
What has been the most surprising thing you have learned (about a specific subject, topic, or even yourself) after taking college credit coursework?
The most surprising thing I have learned about myself after taking college credit coursework is that I enjoy taking college classes more than high school classes. I enjoy the independence of being able to do my work whenever, as long as I get it done on time.
Who (Kirkwood instructor, staff, etc.) has made a lasting impact on you? Why?
One person who has been especially helpful has been my Kirkwood adviser, Michael Jacobsen. He has been very helpful answering questions about what classes I should take and has really helped me be successful in my classes.
How do you feel taking college credit classes better prepares students for their futures?
I think taking college classes in high school can be very beneficial because you get some of the sense of independence that comes with taking college courses. It is very different from high school because nobody is making you do the work, it is all your responsibility.
