MOUNT VERNON — It was a stellar night on the track for Williamsburg’s Ava Hocker at the WaMaC conference meet in Mount Vernon Thursday.
Hocker was named girls most valuable performer and ran the distance of 400-meters three times: one with a baton in hand, one without and one with hurdles.
All ended with the same result, victory.
“It made the three 400s worth it,” Ava Hocker said with a smile after winning MVP. Hocker also ran a leg on the Raiders’ fourth-place 4x100-meter relay team.
Hocker anchored the winning sprint medley relay, which set a new meet record, won the open 400 and the 400 hurdles, a new event for the Raiders’ sophomore.
“Its been really run,“ Ava Hocker said. ”My mom ran the 400 hurdles too, so I can listen to advice from her. Its been a race I’m not putting too much pressure on.“
The Raiders’ sprint medley time ranked fourth statewide after Thursday.
“One thing we have prioritized is our handoffs, which we can still get better at,” 200-meter leg Ailea Wetjen said. “We also have been focusing a lot on finishing well.”
Wetjen had a big night in her individual races on the evening as well.
In two of the most top-heavy events of the evening, Wetjen placed fourth — in both the 100 and 200.
Wetjen’s 200-meter time of 25.31 broke the previous meet record, and Wetjen is in the top 10 in 3A in both events.
“I love the WaMaC meet because the competition is phenomenal,” Wetjen said. “I know I’m able to run personal bests running against girls that are ranked so high in the state.”
All three runner-up finishes for the Raiders came from freshman: Ellie Nielsen in the high jump and Channing Becker in the 3,000 and 1,500.
The Williamsburg girls, as a team, finished runner-up with 104 1/2 team points.
“We have a quite a few of the same teams next weekend at our state-qualifying meet, so I’m looking forward to that,” said Wetjen. ”All of us can still drop some time.“
On the boys’ side, Williamsburg earned one event title, from Rayce Heitman in the long jump.
Heitman jumped 21 feet, 5 3/4 inches in an event he hasn’t performed in since his freshman year.
The boys’ sprint medley team finished runner-up behind a statewide best from Center Point-Urbana.
Grant Hocker broke the previous meet record in the 400, finishing second in 49.18. Heitman was third. Both are in the top 10 in 3A.
Malachai Williams and Dylan Weisskopf both placed in the shot put for the Raiders. Williams finished fifth and Weisskopf seventh.
The Raiders finished seventh as a team with 55 points.
Sixteen meet records were broken on the evening, highlighting the firepower the WaMaC will provide the rest of the postseason.
Both teams will be back at Mount Vernon Thursday for the state-qualifying meet.
